Kiaat & Steel

Our Kiaat

Why kiaat.

Kiaat is an indigenous Southern African hardwood: dense, durable and a rich red-brown. It's the wood we chose for a board that has to last a lifetime of braais.

What is kiaat wood?

Kiaat (Pterocarpus angolensis, also called mukwa or bloodwood) is a hardwood that grows across Southern Africa. It has a rich red-brown grain and has been prized for furniture and boards for generations.

Why does kiaat suit a braai board?

It's stable, so it resists warping and cracking. It's dense and close-grained, so it handles a sharp knife. And it ages well: a little oil every few weeks deepens the colour instead of letting it fade.

Is every board handmade?

Yes. Each board is made by hand in South Africa from solid 35mm kiaat. Every piece of grain is different, so no two boards are the same.

Why steel underneath?

Wood is for carving. Steel is for everything else. The stainless tray is food-safe, slides out to marinate or serve, and goes straight in the dishwasher.
